Both schedules share the same outside diameter for a given nominal size. Schedule 80 has a thicker wall, a higher pressure rating, and a smaller inside diameter. Schedule 40 is the standard choice for general water distribution and irrigation. Schedule 80 is selected for higher pressure service or where extra wall strength is needed.
Mainline size is driven by flow rate, length of run, and acceptable pressure loss.
