Sewer pipe is a gravity pipe, not a pressure pipe

The single most important thing to understand about sewer and drainage pipe is that it works by gravity. Unlike a watermain, which is rated for internal pressure in Bar, a sewer line carries flow downhill at atmospheric pressure. That reframes every specification decision: what matters is the pipe's ring stiffness (its resistance to being crushed by soil and traffic above it), a smooth low-friction bore, and watertight joints that keep effluent in and groundwater out.

Because of this, sewer pipe classes describe stiffness and structural capacity, not pressure rating. A higher class means a thicker wall and greater resistance to deformation under load, so deeper or more heavily-trafficked runs call for a higher class.

Which class do I need?

Class selection comes down to how much load the buried pipe has to resist — a function of burial depth and what runs above it. The classes are structural stiffness ratings, so the deeper the trench and the heavier the surface traffic, the higher the class.

Gradient and flow: getting the fall right

A gravity sewer only works if it is laid to a consistent fall. Too flat and solids settle and block the line; too steep and the liquid outruns the solids, leaving them stranded. The design aim is a self-cleansing velocity that carries solids along without scouring the pipe.

In practice, smaller-diameter branch drains need a steeper gradient than large collector sewers, because a bigger bore reaches self-cleansing velocity at a gentler fall. The smooth internal bore of uPVC helps here: lower friction than concrete or clay means the design fall can often be shallower for the same flow, which reduces excavation depth over a long run.

  • Lay each length to a uniform, continuous fall — avoid back-falls and bellies where effluent can pond.
  • Size the bore for the peak flow plus future connections, not just today's load.

Jointing and installation notes for Saudi sites

uPVC sewer pipe uses an integral socket with a rubber ring seal, which makes a flexible, watertight push-fit joint. A few points that matter on Kingdom projects:

  • Bedding: lay pipe on a uniform granular bed so support is continuous along the barrel, not on the sockets. Point loads on a socket can distort the joint.
  • Backfill: surround and haunch the pipe with rock-free material before compacting, so the ring stiffness is supported by the soil around it.
  • Lubricated joints: use the correct ring lubricant and push each spigot fully home to the witness mark — a partly-made joint leaks and can pull open with ground movement.
  • Watertightness: the rubber-ring seal keeps sewage in and, just as importantly, keeps groundwater and sand out of the line — infiltration is a major cause of downstream treatment overload.
  • Corrosion: uPVC is immune to the hydrogen-sulphide attack and chemical corrosion that degrade concrete and metal sewers, which is a real advantage in warm Saudi ground.
