British Standard (BS) Pipe

BS Standard PVC Pipes Saudi Arabia: BS EN 1452 & BS 3505 Supply

4B Factory manufactures PVC and uPVC pipe primarily to ASTM and SASO specifications, and can also discuss manufacturing to match BS (British Standard) dimensional and material specifications, including BS EN 1452 and BS 3505, for Saudi projects where a British Standard pipe specification has been called out by the consulting engineer.

What Is BS Standard PVC Pipe?

BS standard PVC pipe means uPVC and PVC pipe manufactured to British Standard specifications, most often BS EN 1452 for pressure pipe and the older BS 3505 standard, sized on a metric outside-diameter (OD) system. Saudi projects that follow UK-derived consulting specifications sometimes call for BS-spec pipe alongside, or instead of, the ASTM and SASO requirements used on most local projects.

British Standard pipe specifications turn up on projects designed or reviewed by UK-trained or UK-headquartered consulting engineers, even when construction itself takes place in Saudi Arabia under SASO’s general regulatory framework. In practice this usually means the technical specification or bill of quantities references a BS number directly, for example BS EN 1452 for a pressurized water line, and the supplier is asked to confirm the pipe matches that standard’s dimensional and material requirements rather than defaulting to ASTM or SASO alone.

This page sets out what each relevant BS pipe specification covers, how the BS system compares to ASTM and SASO at a standard level, and how to confirm BS-spec supply with 4B Factory before it goes into a project specification.

Standards Trio

ASTM, SASO & BS: 4B Factory’s Full Standards Coverage

4B Factory publishes PVC and uPVC pipe against the three standards families Saudi projects reference most: ASTM (American), SASO (Saudi) and, on request, BS (British). This page covers BS-spec pipe in detail; use the two links below to compare it against our dedicated ASTM and SASO pages.

BS Sub-Standards

The BS Standards That Apply to PVC & uPVC Pipe

“BS pipe” is not one single document. It is a family of British Standards covering different pipe types and applications. These are the ones most likely to appear in a Saudi project specification.

Current Standard

BS EN 1452

The current British and European standard for unplasticized PVC (PVC-U) piping systems used for water supply and for pressure applications in drainage, sewerage and irrigation. It is the standard most commonly meant when a Saudi specification calls for BS-spec PVC pressure pipe, and it sets dimensions on a metric outside-diameter (OD) basis.

Legacy Standard

BS 3505

The original British Standard for unplasticized PVC pipe for cold water services. It has largely been superseded by BS EN 1452 in current UK practice, though the designation still appears in older specifications and template documents, so it is always worth confirming which version a project actually intends.

Drainage & Sewerage

BS 4660 / BS EN 1401

British and European standards covering unplasticized PVC pipe and fittings for buried gravity drainage and sewerage. These become relevant where a Saudi drainage or sewer package references UK-derived specifications, and relate closely to 4B Factory’s uPVC sewer pipe range.

Dimensional System

Metric OD Sizing

BS pipe is sized by outside diameter (OD) in millimetres, the same basic logic used by SASO and ISO-aligned metric systems. This is a different sizing convention from ASTM, which uses an inch-based Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) and Schedule system, so dimensions are not interchangeable across standards without checking the relevant tables.

Standard Comparison

BS vs ASTM vs SASO: How the Systems Compare

The table below compares BS, ASTM and SASO at a system level: sizing logic, governing body and where each tends to be specified in Saudi Arabia. It is a starting point for a conversation, not a substitute for checking the exact clause of the standard named in your project documents.

Aspect BS (British Standard) ASTM (American) SASO (Saudi Arabia)
Typical PVC/uPVC pipe standards BS EN 1452, BS 3505 for pressure pipe; BS 4660 / BS EN 1401 for drainage ASTM D1785, D2241, D2665, D3034 and related ASTM specifications SASO 14, SASO 15 and related Saudi national pipe specifications
Sizing basis Metric outside diameter (OD) in millimetres Inch-based Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) with Schedule ratings Metric outside diameter (OD) in millimetres, ISO-aligned
Governing body British Standards Institution (BSI), harmonized with European EN standards ASTM International Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO)

Supply & Specification

Can 4B Factory Supply BS-Spec Pipe?

ASTM and SASO are 4B Factory’s primary published manufacturing standards, and the majority of our production runs to those specifications for projects across Saudi Arabia. Where a project genuinely calls for BS-spec pipe, most often under an international consulting engineer’s specification, we can discuss manufacturing PVC and uPVC pipe to match the relevant BS dimensional and material requirements, such as BS EN 1452 outside-diameter sizing and pressure class, on a project-specific basis, across product lines that include pressure pipe and our uPVC duct pipe range.

We do not claim blanket, pre-existing BS certification across every product line, and BS-spec supply for a particular project should always be confirmed directly with our engineering team before it is written into a purchase order or specification. Four Brothers Industrial Co. has manufactured PVC and uPVC pipe in Al-Kharj since 2020; read more about the factory or see where we currently supply across the Kingdom.

  • The pressure class (PN rating) and diameter range needed
  • Whether SASO approval is also required alongside the BS specification
  • Documentation, testing and lead-time requirements for your project timeline
FAQ

BS Standard Pipe: Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most often about BS-spec PVC and uPVC pipe on Saudi projects.

BS stands for British Standard, the mark used by the British Standards Institution (BSI) for standards developed in the United Kingdom, including specifications covering unplasticized PVC (PVC-U) pipe for pressure and drainage applications. In pipe documentation, a BS number identifies which UK specification a pipe’s dimensions, materials and testing are intended to follow.

BS EN 1452 is the current British and European standard for unplasticized PVC (PVC-U) piping systems used for water supply and for pressure applications in drainage, sewerage and irrigation. It sets out requirements for pipe dimensions on a metric outside-diameter (OD) basis, material properties and pressure classes, and it is the standard most commonly referenced when a Saudi project specification calls for BS-spec PVC pressure pipe.

BS 3505 was the original British Standard for unplasticized PVC pipe for cold water services and has largely been superseded by BS EN 1452 in current UK practice. The BS 3505 designation still appears in some older engineering specifications, template documents and legacy project references, so where a Saudi project cites BS 3505 it is worth confirming with the specifying engineer whether BS EN 1452 is the standard actually intended.

BS and SASO both size pipe by metric outside diameter (OD) in millimetres, while ASTM uses an inch-based Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) and Schedule system, so the three standards are not interchangeable on dimensions alone. BS, ASTM and SASO also differ in governing body, material and testing requirements, which is why 4B Factory treats standard selection as a project-specific decision rather than a one-size-fits-all answer; see the comparison table above for a system-level summary.

ASTM and SASO are 4B Factory’s primary published manufacturing standards, and where a project calls for BS-spec pipe we can discuss manufacturing to match the relevant BS dimensional and material specifications, such as BS EN 1452, on a project-specific basis. We do not hold blanket BS certification across every product line, so BS-spec supply for a particular project should always be confirmed directly with our team before it is finalized in a specification or order.

Before specifying BS pipe for a Saudi project, confirm the exact BS sub-standard intended (for example BS EN 1452 versus BS 3505), the required pressure class and diameter range, and whether the project also requires SASO approval alongside the BS specification. Raising these points with 4B Factory through the contact page early in the project helps confirm feasibility and lead time before the specification is finalized.
